Headaches

Written By Orland Park Chiropractic on June 12, 2024

For many people, headaches are a common occurrence.  Many have come to believe they have no alternative but to accept the temporary relief offered by taking drugs (either prescription or over the counter pain remedies).

The continued dependence on drugs to cover up headache pain may be in part due to the fact that one of the leading causes of headaches is so often overlooked.

Several studies have demonstrated that neck dysfunction of the muscles and joints is the originating cause of in excess of 90% of headaches.

The joints, muscles and ligaments of the neck require a delicate balance of motion, coordination, strength and flexibility to function efficiently and without pain.  Injury (recent or prior), poor posture, stress and repetitive strain are common causes of irritation to the neck.

Irritation to any of the neck structures affects near-by nerves which can produce a headache with a variety of presentations.

The most appropriate treatment for headaches due to joint and muscle dysfunction is chiropractic care.  Chiropractors focus on identifying the source of the pain and reducing it by improving spine, joint and muscle alignment, function and balance to prevent recurrence.

A headache can signal a serious underlying condition and therefore warrants professional evaluation.

If your headache is one that does not fit into the above category, your chiropractor will refer you to the appropriate health care professional for additional evaluation and care.
