Sciatica / Leg Pain
Patients frequently come to our clinic for treatment of "sciatica." They describe low back pain that can radiate into the hip, buttock and even down the leg. The pain can come on very suddenly and can be quite severe.
The term "sciatica" refers to pain following the path of the sciatic nerve. This rather large nerve is formed by the combination of several smaller nerves as they exit the spine in the low back.
The sciatic nerve travels through the hip before going down the leg. It is responsible for (1) sending information to muscles enabling us to move and (2) receiving information from structures to give us sensation in our legs.
Conditions that irritate any part of the sciatic nerve can produce low back, hip, buttock or leg pain, numbness or tingling.
Spine conditions such as a herniated disc, arthritis, spur formation or spinal joint problems can cause sciatic pain.
Sciatic pain is a serious condition since nerve damage is possible. It is important to determine the cause of sciatic pain early to prevent potential permanent nerve damage.
Chiropractic care focuses on identifying the source of pain and reducing it by improving spine, joint and muscle function and balance to prevent future occurrence.
If you or someone you know has new or recurring pain, seek the advice of a chiropractor to determine if your problem can be helped with conservative chiropractic care.
